How do I evaluate a website?
Answer
If your instructors allow using websites as sources, you'll want to locate credible, informative websites for your research. One important element is the domain name in the website’s URL. Avoid those ending in .com and use sites ending in:
- .edu = A website hosted by an educational organization
- .gov = A federal government website
- .org = Commonly used by schools, open-source projects, and communities. Some .org websites can be biased so be sure to use websites that represent different opinions, to provide balance.
More information on evaluating websites is also available at the research guides website page, including an ABCD Web Evaluation Checklist and a list of librarian recommended websites.
